It was late December 2015 when I decided to read 100 books in 2016. I did not expect the excitement when I tallied the total and realized I beat my goal by 1 (per GoodReads). In 2016, I read 101 books and I am for the better because of this big hairy, audacious goal.

  • Business Acumen: Most of the books I read in 2016 were business related. I previously explored returning to college to complete a MBA but, decided that education provided in the courses could be decently replicated by this goal. The books “The Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive: A Leadership Fable”, “How to Lie with Statistics”, “Crucial Conversations Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High”, and “Survival of the Savvy” are great books for increasing business acumen and temperament.
  • Technical Knowledge – I would be a horrible technology practitioner if I did not continue to build on this strength. The GIAC GREM books, “How to Lie with Statistics”, “Phishing Dark Waters: The Offensive and Defensive Sides of Malicious Emails”, “Data-Driven Security: Analysis, Visualization, and Dashboards”, and “Practical Reverse Engineering: x86, x64, ARM, Windows Kernel, Reversing Tools, and Obfuscation” are great books for increasing technical aptitude.
  • Creativity – I realized halfway through 2016, I had more references and knowledge to draw from than any other point on my life. I believe it was due to the amount of knowledge I gained from reading roughly 50 books. I was ability to quickly solve problems and innovate at a faster pace helping my organization, peers, and myself adapt and excel rapidly. I highly suggest reading, “Thinkertoys: A Handbook of Creative-Thinking Techniques”, to understand creativity boasting techniques.
  • Less TV and Video Games – My close family and friends can tell you stories of my love of Star Trek and Civilization. However, to reach my goal, I had to reduce the amount of time spend on both. There were some books (Looking at you “Practical Reverse Engineering: x86, x64, ARM, Windows Kernel, Reversing Tools, and Obfuscation”) where I rather have been conquering continents as the Zulu than reading. I no longer have the urge to spent countless days watching Captain Sisko defeat the Dominion; that free time has been dedicated to refining my craft and exploring Entrepreneurship. Speaking of Entrepreneurship, “Rework” is an amazing book.
